Gajanan Jagirdar, an all-encompassing artiste was probably the first freelancer of Indian films. Jagirdar, his screen name, was an actor, writer, director, producer, film activist, teacher and also the only "Principal' of the premier film school, 'Film Institute of India, Pune' in 1960. He was associated with important films such as Shejari, Ramshastri, Bairam Khan, Umrao Jaan, Guide, Hum Dono, Apradhi Kaun, Jail Yatra, etc. Jagirdar's journey started in the silent, black and white era of cinema in the pre independence India where the studio system was dominating and it went on to take challenges of talkie, colour film, star system and television formats, post independence. This monograph brings out many unknown stories of Indian cinema while throwing light on Jagirdar's multifaceted personality!

Dr. Milind Damle, the author is Head of Department, TV Direction at Film and Television Institute of India Pune. His films have been showcased at several film festivals including International Film Festival of India, Goa as a part of Indian Panorama. Dr. Damle is a recipient of various fellowships including National Film Archives of India, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and National Institute of Naturopathy, Ministry of Aayush.
