In spatial ecology of water, architect and educator Meghal Arya bring her distinctive and incisive analysis of architecture for water, which she first developed in her 2017 doctoral research, Knowledge embedded in Architecture. The book’s assessment of many entities in the ecological-system -of which architecture is an essential part- is crafted around various water structures: reservoirs, tanks, and step-wells; highlighting the interconnected relationship between water and its container.
Through formal, scholastic, and textural readings supported by rich illustrations -both photographs and drawings of the water structures in Jodhpur, the author takes readers on a captivating journey tracing the flows of water. This book is an excellent commentary on the domestication of water, flowing and traveling through various drainage basins received and contained in well-crafted architecture, managed by ingenious networks and systems. In the end, the author argues upon changing paradigms of the spatiality of water, hoping to invoke a sense of responsibility and conversation amongst many stakeholders dealing with the purposeful regeneration of urban infrastructure.
