As the chief of the Indian Army’s Northern Command, he played a critical role to get the People’s Liberation Army to withdraw beyond the Indian claim line at Finger 8 on the north bank of Pangong Tso. This strategic move forced China to negotiate Ladakh disengagement.

He commanded 13 JAK Rifles in Operation Vijay during the Kargil War and Operation Parakram. The 13 JAK Rifles unit, in his command during Operation Vijay, was awarded with a total of 37 gallantry awards, including two Param Vir Chakra, eight Vir Chakra and 14 sena medals.
