In a village in Jashpur, a district in Chhattisgarh, lived a family of six. The head of the family was an old lady whom everyone addressed as 'Dadi'. Dadi lived with her son, Bholu, his wife, Vijaya, and their three daughters Shibra, Hiramani and Albina. The girls were popular by their nicknames Badki, Majhli and Chhutki.
The family had a small piece of land on which they grew vegetables for their own use, some rice and peanuts. They owned a pair of buffaloes, too, who tilled their land. Their house was on a slope and below the slope flowed the River Kotebira. The people of the village came to the river to fill water for their household needs.
