Summary: The Snakes Around Us gives us an insight into the fascinating world of snakes in a simple and non-technical language. The present edition, which is a revised and enlarged version of the existing title with some added information and many new photographs, underlines the integral place that snakes have in the ecosystem and how they are beneficial to human society as well. Though written for young readers, it is a useful guide to anyone interested to know about the different species of snakes, their relationship with snake charmers and snake catchers and the medicinal qualities of their venom etc. Rom is known as the 'Snake Man of India. Born in USA, he took Indian citizenship and has lived here since he was seven years old. He is the founder of several organisations including the Madras Snake Park, Irula Snake- catchers' Cooperative, and Madras Crocodile Bank (with Zai). He has made many films on reptiles, and written several books on snakes, including Snakes of India-the Field Guide. He is a Trustee of the Croc Bank and plays an active role in running and developing it. He has probably caught, studied, and looked after more reptiles than anyone else in India! A true reptile junky! Zai is a Founder-Trustee of the Crocodile Bank, and continues to work there along with her son Nikhil. She is also a writer, and has published about 20 books, most of them about wildlife and the environment. They include the award-winning Salim Mamoo and Me, about her bird-watcher uncle Salim Ali, and Andamans Boy, Kall and the Rat Snake, and Kanna Panna. She has also written film scripts, including the script for the film The Boy and the Crocodile. She writes articles for magazines and newspapers as well. Her other interest is education. She has been an English teacher, and Principal of two schools. She feels crocodiles are easier to manage than students! https://www.nbtindia.gov.in/books_detail__10__nehru-bal-pustakalaya__961__the-snakes-around-us.nbt
