| Summary, etc | This publication continues the debate on development and displacement that are two faces of the same coin. The approach to them depends on the development paradigm that the leaders opted for. Most decision-makers view development only as GDP growth and building an infrastructure, and justify displacement as sad but inevitable. Those who want inclusive development which involves economic and social growth going hand in hand, believe that in the present development paradigm people who lose their sustenance in the name of national development and those who get its benefits belong to two different classes. The former are impoverished for the comforts of the latter. The study on which this publication is based, tested this hypothesis in Meghalaya through an analysis of the extent of land used for projects 1947-2010 and the number of persons deprived of their sustenance for it. The numbers involved, the failure to rehabilitate them and its impacts leave one with the impression that the GDP and infrastructure growth based model prevails. One found signs of impoverishment and of social and environmental degradation, particularly after globalisation.
